Supporting Places
It is the intention of the Foundation Appeal to provide resources to improve and, where necessary, augment the physical facilities for teaching and learning at Grimsdell, Belmont and Mill Hill. These vary widely from the proposed multi-million pound investment in a new classroom building for Belmont to the projects listed in the Annual Funds (all under £5K and many under £1K). In between these extremes are the Annual Projects, with a significant contribution being made by the Foundation Appeal to the redecoration of the Large, the Golf Academy and the significant refurbishments of Murray House, School House and the Science Building. Funding for the final phases of the latter is actively being sought.
While it is not always possible to identify the beneficiaries of bursary funding, it is easy and we are pleased to recognise the generosity which has made possible enhancements to the physical fabric of the foundation and its estate. Many of the buildings and other projects to which the Foundation Appeal has contributed are marked with plaques thanking those people who made them possible.
To achieve its goals the Foundation needs to ensure that its facilities are of the highest possible standard. Generations of Millhillians have benefited from the generosity of members of its community.
Around the School’s centenary at the start of the twentieth century, under Sir John McClure, some of the major buildings which define the Mill Hill School Foundation were built funded by, amongst others, Lord Winterstoke of Blagdon (the Winterstoke Library and the Chapel), Herbert Marnham (Marnham Building) and Richard Grimsdell, whose legacy transformed the pre-prep School. Other buildings bear the names of great members of the community – the McClure Music School, the Buckland Garden and the Patrick Troughton Theatre.
In more recent times the artificial sports surface on Fishing Net was made possible by the generosity of an Old Millhillian. This facility was further enhanced by the installation of floodlights which allow training and matches to take place during winter months.
In the 2010 Annual Review the Chief Executive of the Foundation showed his commitment to science teaching not just at Mill Hill but also Belmont by illustrating what the new science teaching facilities at Belmont will look like. No schedule for the building work is yet confirmed but the first significant gifts towards this project have been received, which is very encouraging.
